Did The Sixth Sense start the pseudo-scientific “I can see dead people” craze of the new millennium?
I don’t remember a lot of people claiming to be psychic on the media before the 1999 release of the Sixth Sense. Did this movie have anything to do with the rise in all the pseudo-scientific psychic scams going around in the media and the internet?
Another question, did the movie have anything to do with a rise in claims of kids claiming they have psychic powers or just can see dead people?

Oh, gosh…I think that just means you don’t remember it. Sylvia Brown is a great example of a psychic in the media LONG before Sixth Sense. The movie may have contributed to this being more popular with the non-psychics, but it’s actually more likely the reverse…the movie was so popular because so many people want to believe it’s true.

LOL, no. Depending on what you believe, both the legitimate phenomena and the scam have been with us a very long time. Research the seance era and you’ll see what I mean. Also, even then, people tried to “scientifically” prove the phenomena, or fake it in the case of the scam.
@ Nada on that one, too. Seems that kids are a little better at sensing such things than adults, and that some type of governor comes into play as we get older..at least with most people. Don’t you like The Sixth Sense? Stir of Echos is better. (:

Psychic phenomena and psi abilities are not a “scam.” There is an estimated 12 to 15% of the world’s population– that’s 720 to 780 million people who has psi gifts although that number may be higher now. And except for America, such abilities has been acknowledged and valued by almost every culture and civilization on this planet or do you think that every one is so stupid that they would believe in something without any kind of proof? Everyone in the ancient world went to the oracle at Delphi for her predictions because they were accurate! Before the 18th century and the slow rise of science, nobody questioned the existence of such abilities; even now the question isn’t so much that they aren’t real but that they go against the stagnant electromagnetism paradigm that mainstream science has gotten itself stuck in.
But while science had its collective head buried in the sand, Hollywood was catering to the public interest with movies like the Power (1968), Carrie (1976), the Fury with Kirk Douglas (1978), Scanners (1981), Firestarter with Drew Barrymore, Martin Sheen, George C. Scott (1984), Scanners II: The New Order (1991), Phenomenon (1996), X-Men (2000)– and so on and so on. If there was no market for them, movies– and TV shows– about unusual people with unusual abilities would have died a long time ago. The Sixth Sense was just one more movie in the chain; no better and no worse but it had a catchphrase that stuck with audiences for a while– “I see dead people”– and then like other movie catch-phrases, it was gone. But psi abilities haven’t, nor, as Randi and his zealots would intimate, are they all fake. oh, sure, some are–but some conventional scientists have been caught lying and faking results, too (but the skeptics never mention them) but I know a guy who has won a lot of money at the lottery eight friggin’ times! If precognition is a trick, I sure want to know how to do it too, 🙂
