Is it necessary for the ideas of ghosts and the afterlife to coexist?
I always kind of believed in ghosts/hauntings because I think it’s kind of a fun thing to believe in, but I don’t really believe in the existence of an afterlife. So I guess when I really think about, I don’t believe in ghosts because I believe that you die when you die. Is there any way for me to still believe in ghosts and hauntings without buying into the concept of an “afterlife” (namely heaven and hell)?

no because ghosts dont give birth to ghost’s

Yes. If you follow psychics, ghost-hunters, etc., they often say that ghosts are a psychic impression left behind by someone – not their spirit returned to the earthly plane.
So metaphysics are required, but not necesarily religion for you to believe in ghosts.

Ghosts don’t have to be dead people. They could simply be demons (not related to religion) more like monsters.
Or they could be forms of energy left behind from people.
Something like a guy living in a house for a very long time, then one day he moved away. His presence there was so strong that he left behind a “ghost” of himself, maybe some form of energy, and it now haunts the house.
